How Often Do You Need an Eye Exam?
When was the last time you had a comprehensive eye exam? If it’s been more than two years, there’s a good chance you’re overdue. In fact, the AOA recommends comprehensive eye and vision exams at least once every two years for men and women between the ages of 18 and 60. For those younger than 18 or older than 60, more frequent (such as annual) exams may be recommended. It is also worth noting that the frequency with which you should have an eye exam done will also vary based on your eye health. If you have any known eye conditions or diseases, your eye doctor may recommended more frequent exams.
The Importance of Tulsa Eye Exams for Women and Men
So, why are regular Tulsa eye exams for women and men so important, anyway? For starters, even if you aren’t showing any signs or symptoms of eye problems, a comprehensive exam with your optometrist could reveal hidden signs that would otherwise go unnoticed for years. By being able to catch these things early on, we have a better chance at being able to treat, manage, and even reverse the effects of certain eye conditions and diseases. Unfortunately, without routine eye exams, the damage could already be done by the time you begin to notice symptoms and come into our office.
Furthermore, regular eye exams help to ensure that your vision prescription is up-to-date. Even if you haven’t noticed any obvious changes in your vision over the past couple of years, even an extremely subtle change will require a new vision prescription (new contact lenses or glasses). Otherwise, wearing the wrong prescription could even further damage your eyesight and ocular health.
Above all else, comprehensive Tulsa eye exams for men and women every two years give you the peace of mind in knowing where you stand when it comes to your eye health.
What to Expect From an Eye Exam in Tulsa
At the beginning of your eye exam, you can expect your optometrist to ask you some basic questions about your eye and vision health. If you have any symptoms, questions, or concerns, about your eye health, now would be the time to bring them up.
Next, a number of tests will be conducted to assess the health of your eyes, including:
- an eye muscle movement test
- cover test
- visual acuity test
- refraction testing
Depending on the results of these tests, additional diagnostics may be required. Your eye doctor will keep you informed along the way. At the end of your appointment, you may be asked to come in for additional screenings if needed, or you may be given a new prescription for your lenses.
